The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAFWLR), in collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia (LLPBN), the FMD Support Fund, and Namibian Farmers’ Unions and Associations, will conduct a Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Regional Awareness Campaign from 16–20 March 2026.
The campaign will take place in the following regions: Omaheke, Otjozondjupa, Oshikoto,
Hardap, ǁKaras, Kunene, and Erongo.
This initiative forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen FMD awareness, preparedness, and response in light of the increased FMD threat within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
The awareness campaign aims to strengthen Namibia’s preparedness and response to FMD through regional engagement sessions with livestock farmers. These sessions will provide critical information on FMD, including the risk of disease spread to Namibia, the potential impact of an outbreak, the FMD Contingency Plan, mitigation measures implemented in the country, and on-farm biosecurity measures, in order to enhance collective readiness.
Teams comprising veterinary officials from the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia (LLPBN) will conduct the sessions. These engagements will also provide an opportunity to address concerns raised during previous stakeholder engagements and to inform farmers and stakeholders about the measures the Ministry has put in place to mitigate the spread of the disease.
The meetings aim to engage both commercial and communal farmers, as well as key livestock stakeholders and all participants within the livestock value chain, with particular emphasis on farmers located in high-risk areas, who play a crucial role in disease prevention and control efforts.
